Description
“The beach of pebbles bright as snow.
The boat had touched this silver strand
Just as the Hunter left his stand,
And stood concealed amid the brake,
To view this Lady of the Lake.
The maiden paused, as if again
She thought to catch the distant strain.
With head upraised, and look intent,
And eye and ear attentive bent,
And locks flung back, and lips apart,
Like monument of Grecian art,
In listening mood, she seemed to stand,
The guardian Naiad of the strand.” ~ Sir Walter Scott
The Lady of the Lake is a very ancient and mysterious figure from Arthurian Lore. It is she who gives Arthur his sword Excalibur, which is one of the four sacred hallows of the faery realm. She is known by various names, including Nimue', Vivian, and Morgan le Fay, and she rules over the Isle of Avalon. Here she sails across the stormy lake, sword in hand, to meet Merlin. Perhaps they are planning to set things in motion to bring Arthur into the world in hopes that he can create bridges between the worlds of faery and human.
