Her wise and sometimes frightening face is often connected with the wise owl, and with death, war, and destruction. She brings decay, so new growth can emerge from the old, just as she transforms herself back to the form of the maiden. We see this cycle repeated every day as darkness becomes dawn, and every year as winter turns to spring.
